Dr. Burch is a tenured Associate Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics, Arnold School of Public Health, University of South Carolina (USC). He also has an appointment in the USC Cancer Prevention and Control Program, and he is a Health Science Specialist at the Dorn Veterans Affairs Medical Center in Columbia, South Carolina. He possesses a PhD degree in Environmental Health Science with a specialization in Epidemiology, and a MS degree in Pharmaceutical Science. His primary research focus is on the effects of circadian rhythm disruption on cancer incidence and survival. He has been engaged in scholarly work in Environmental, Occupational, and Molecular Epidemiologyfor over two decades, including research in international settings (Bulgaria, Ecuador, Germany, Honduras, India, New Zealand, Spain, Venezuela). He has authored or co-authored 75 peer-reviewed publications, many with student advisees as co-authors. In 2008, he received an Excellence in Research award from the South Carolina Cancer Alliance, and in 2001, he received a national Merit in Authorship award from the American College of Occupational and Environmental Medicine. From 1986 to 1993, he served as a consulting Health and Safety Officer and Risk Assessment Manager, and received a Project Excellence Award for work completed during that period. His teaching duties as Course Instructor at USC include one undergraduate course (Principles of Epidemiology, EPID 410), and three graduate level courses: Introduction to Epidemiology (EPID J700), Environmental Factors and Human Health (EPID 747), and Biologic Basis of Public Health (EPID 725). As part of his community service activities, Dr. Burch served as Chairman of the Screening Subcommittee for the SC Cancer Alliance’s Colorectal Cancer Work Group (2007-9), which developed a statewide plan for colorectal cancer screening targeting uninsured, under-served residents.He currently serves as a Mentor on USC’s Behavioral Biomedical Interface Program. He has served as the Principal Investigator (PI) or Co-Investigator on numerous extramurally funded research grants, and he is currently a PI for a behavioral clinical intervention trial that is examining whether heart rate variability biofeedback can ameliorate pain, fatigue, depression or insomnia among patients with chronic pain.
Feifei Xiao, PhD
Dr. Xiao is an Assistant Professor in the Department of Epidemiology and Biostatistics. She joined in the department after her postdoc training from the Department of Biostatistics in Yale University in 2015. She earned her PhD degree from the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center in 2013. Dr. Xiao's research mainly focuses on the development and application of powerful and efficient statistical methods for high throughput genetic data, driven by the challenges arising from the modern biology technologies such as microarray and next-generation sequencing. She specifically works on chromosomal copy number variation detection, integrative analysis of ‘omic’ data (such as SNP, methylation and expression data), and neuroimaging genetic data analysis. Much of her effort is motivated by ongoing collaboration projects in cancer, aging, maternal and child health. She is interested in providing efficient statistical tools to integrate the genetic data into practice of precision medicine. Dr. Xiao is teaching courses including Intermediate of Biostatistics, and Statistical Genetics.
